Vitamin D use prevents the tooth cavity formation

Vitamin D use, which has become even more vital in our lives as a result of the pandemic, is also crucial in avoiding dental cavities.

Assoc Dr. Fatıma Betül Baştürk, Faculty member at Istanbul Gelisim University, Endodontics Department talked about how tooth cavities can be prevented.

Assoc. Dr. Fatıma Betül Baştürk, Faculty member at Istanbul Gelisim University Faculty of Dentistry, discussed strategies to protect oral health with the usage of vitamin D, stating that the formation of dental caries is dependent on numerous factors ranging from a person's diet to the quality of their saliva.

"THE FIRST THIRTEEN YEARS ARE VERY SIGNIFICANT IN VITAMIN D SUPPLEMENTATION"

Vitamin D, which is essential for human health, plays an active role in fighting many health problems as well. In persons with low vitamin D levels, poor oral hygiene can lead to a variety of gum and dental problems. Stating that vitamin D deficiency in pregnant women also increases the susceptibility to caries due to insufficient production of enamel tissue in the future, Assoc. Dr. Fatma Betül Baştürk also added following:

“With the Covid-19 pandemic in recent years, we have started to hear the name of vitamin D more. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin. Its deficiency is also common in our country. Mothers-to-be who are vitamin D deficient should not despair right away. In the first 13 years of life, sufficient vitamin D levels reduce caries risk by 47%."

However, due to vitamin D deficiency, the incidence of gingival and peri-implant disorders may increase after the age of 13. Vitamin D levels should be examined at regular intervals, and if necessary, supplementation under the supervision of a doctor may be required.
