Tips for being a “Creative Writer”

Asst. Prof. Dr. Şerefnur Atik, who stated the prerequisite of being a good writer is to be a "good reader", indicated that it is possible to learn and develop writing techniques in order to be a good writer.

“Writing” first requires talent. Some people have an innate talent to be good writers. This ability can be developed primarily by being a good reader and learning certain techniques. Stating that it takes a long time and practice to gain creative writing experience, Asst. Prof. Dr. Şerefnur Atik, Faculty of Economics, Administrative and Social Sciences, Department of Turkish Language and Literature at Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU), talked about the tips for being a "Creative Writer".

LEARN THE TECHNIQUES

Asst. Prof. Dr. Şerefnur Atik indicated the following: ‘’Before answering the “How must we write?” question, the age group studied must be taken into consideration. There are many techniques for writing. If you need to rank them from easy to difficult, you can first start by developing fiction with independent words. Combining individual pieces of text, embedding a piece of text into another piece of text can be given as examples of techniques that can be applied by those who want to improve themselves in creative writing. As an author works on it over time, other techniques for creative writing will emerge.

WHAT CAN BE DONE BEFORE STARTING A WRITING?
  1. Get a “sketchbook”: Writer candidates should always carry a pen and notebook with them. Write down a beautiful sentence that comes to your mind while you are on a ferry, train or plane. Wait a little for later review and improvement.
  2. Get a “specific notebook for your writings”: After waiting process what you wrote in the sketchbook, write it in its final form and an improved version in that notebook.
  3. Gather information: The next step of the preparation phase is gathering information. It is inevitable for an author not to know the details of the environment s/he will use in her/his writings. Authors must create their own style, that is, their own expression style.
  4. Find the answer to the question "What will I tell": Finding the answer to this question is the first step to the magical world of a written text. With the inner journey realized, questions such as "how will I tell, which narrative techniques will I use?" must be answered.
